Arnold Newman Lecture Series on Photography: Sunil Gupta
Artist Sunil Gupta, whose work is featured in This Is Britain: Photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, chats with Kara Felt, exhibition curator and former Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow in the National Gallery’s department of photographs.

Sunil Gupta (born in New Delhi, 1953) is a photographer, curator, writer, and activist. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Gupta has maintained a visionary approach to photography, producing bodies of work with keen social and political commentary. The artist’s diasporic experience of multiple cultures informs a practice dedicated to themes of race, migration, and queer identity. His photographic projects—born from a desire to see himself and others like him represented in art history—draw upon his own life as a point of departure.
